The one thing I can’t stress enough is to always have a warm and fuzzy feeling for the people you love and care about. Nothing is worse than being sad or upset, and while you would hope you would feel the same way, sometimes you do not. But when it happens, when you realize that you are not the same person you were a year ago. It sucks. It’s not the end of the world.
A year ago, when I first heard the news about Kerry Condon, the former lead singer of The Killers was the first person I met after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was diagnosed with cancer that was in remission and my brother and I still cared about her. She is the closest family member I’ve ever had, and she has become one of my closest friends through this whole thing.
When you think about it, it is really hard to be the same person for more than a year. It hurts, but we have to keep going. It’s also a reminder that it is still okay to be different… so often, our identities are in a constant state of flux.
The fact that my brother and I are best friends without knowing how long it will last is a testament to how great our relationship is. We are always cheering one another on and loving one another in spite of the fact that we are just a few feet apart from each other. We don’t have secrets or any type of privacy. We are the same person. We are always going to be best friends, even if we never know how things will end.
