I’ve been going to the same place for over 30 years and, while I know it’s true that most places aren’t the same as the ones I’ve visited before, I still have a list of places I’ve “lived” in (or at least seen their past) that I still hold dear.
Ive also lived through my share of times when Ive had to leave places or my friends and family behind to work on a new project. The one time I was on a boat and had to leave my home to do a construction project with a friend I made a promise to myself that I would never leave that place again. And, like many of you, my decision to leave and go back home was the right one.
Ive been back to places before, and that list includes my current house, my house that I built when I was still in college (which was actually pretty close to my old place), and my old house in Brooklyn. Of course, Ive also lived in other places Ive visited and seen in the past. For the longest time I held a lot of resentment towards this list because I did not know that many of these places were still there.
After I moved out of my old house in Brooklyn, I spent a lot of time with some really cool friends. My friend who was also a graphic designer, and who I had known since we were little kids, had a house in an old industrial neighborhood. This neighborhood was on the river, so when you walked away from it, the whole area was just kind of abandoned. We spent a lot of time walking around, and sometimes we’d sit and talk.
After a lot of time, we realized that it was actually very cool that the river was still there. The river was the way people used to walk in Brooklyn. It wasn’t the river that was the way that the old houses were.
We had always assumed that the river was just a great place to hide, but we were wrong. We were in a house the architect had never seen before, and it was just really cool. The river had just been the place to park all the cars from the old neighborhood so that nobody could see the house.
The river was once the street. It was the road that the old houses were connected to.
The river is now a lot more than just a river. It is a river that connects the old neighborhood to the current neighborhood. It is a river that is now the road that it is connected to. It is a river that is now the street that it is connected to.
